This individual academic project delves into the fascinating realm of typefaces, focusing on the creation of a comprehensive typeface specimen booklet. I carefully chose the Le Monde Sans font and started a design project inspired by its history, resulting in a unique booklet with a magazine and newspaper style. The project unfolds across three key sections: research, design process, and weeks efforts in the final design. Join me on this exploration of typography and design as we navigate the intricate details and creative nuances of the Le Monde Sans typeface.
Throughout the creation of this booklet, I navigated through different stages of the drafting process. The most challenging part involved finding ways to improve the design solely using the typeface, without incorporating any images.
Upon reviewing the initial digital draft, I realized the font size was too large for printing. There was a noticeable difference between how it appeared on the screen and on paper. Additionally, the color choices in the first draft were too subdued, imparting an outdated vibe and failing to capture the festive atmosphere intended for the holiday edition. Consequently, adjustments were implemented in the subsequent revision.
In the initial versions, I contemplated incorporating a flip-over design on the back cover to convey the idea that the newspaper font had been dispersed with the newspaper. However, the outcome was not as satisfactory as I had hoped. Consequently, I opted for the regular order in subsequent revisions.
To merge Le Monde Sans' historical newspaper significance with a contemporary holiday touch, I opted for vibrant colors (#e5afad, #7ca489, #ca5e5c, #5d8f6c, #bd3633, #024f1b) as the primary palette for this news-themed booklet, enhancing the overall reading experience with a splash of enjoyment.
The design concept looks around harmonizing the traditional Le Monde Sans with a holiday-themed newspaper look. The booklet presents the typeface as a versatile family designed for news across the world, emphasizing its adaptability in both print and digital media. The newspaper-inspired layout and holiday color scheme create a festive and approachable atmosphere, reinforcing the font's adaptability for various contexts.
In conclusion, this booklet was designed to better appreciate the beauty of "Le Monde Sans," using only letters and no pictures. The idea is to focus on the words themselves, giving readers a chance to connect with the text in a special way. By keeping it simple and using just letters, I wanted to show how the words can speak for themselves, without needing pictures. This design choice helps people concentrate on the text and feel a stronger connection to the words. The goal is to make "Le Monde Sans" more enjoyable and meaningful by presenting it in a simple and focused way. The booklet provides some insights for designers and typographers working in digital media.
